Oil Spill Source Identification: Fingerprinting Beyond Dispute

Biomarker and isotope fingerprinting can separate operator hydrocarbons from third-party interference with forensic confidence.

Spill attribution disputes in the Niger Delta usually turn on whether the released hydrocarbon matches a specific operator stream. Gas chromatography combined with biomarker ratios and compound-specific isotope analysis provides that resolution.

The method compares weathering-resistant markers — steranes, terpanes and diagnostic ratios — between the environmental sample and candidate source oils, so that even a heavily degraded sample retains a comparable signature.

For operators, an early, independent fingerprint protects against liability creep. For communities and regulators, it establishes an evidential record that stands up to scrutiny.
